Why does adversity bring some people closer to God ?
Why does adversity bring some people closer to God whereas with other people it has the opposite effect.
With some people like Mattie Stepanek adversity in their life brought them closer to God.
With other people it has the exact opposite effect. For example,Lance Armstrong, the cyclist who had testicular cancer is on record as saying "If there was a god, I’d still have both nuts"
Why didn’t adversity bring him closer to God ?
For those who don’t know of Mattie Stepanek . He was a child that suffered from muscular dystrophy and wrote poems about God, love and peace. You can see him and hear one of his poems at.

Atheists don’t tell me it’s only because he was a child, there are countless of other adults that became closer to God through adversity.

It comes down to a matter of the heart. Those that draw closer to God because of adversity probably had thoughts or beliefs about Him already, but just hadn’t paused long enough to truly consider Him. The adversity provides this pause that they needed and they call upon Him and draw close to Him. Those that get angry at God during times of adversity probably already had thoughts of anger toward God. Their adversity just brings that anger to the forefront and gives them reason to be more vocal about it.
When you hit rock bottom, the only way to look, is up.
They say there are no athiests in foxholes, but that is untrue, Many who have died in war are with Abaddon. Adversity can cause a person to seek God. However, many of these forget about him when the troubles are over. We now have seven years of troubles for people to try their faith.
David Ring, with cerebral palsy, has a large church. He is hard to understand until you get used to hearing him. Really inspirational. Told he would never have children. He is married with several children
It’s hard to say why it brings some closer to God and drives some farther away
It is strictly a matter of person choice? Adversity is sure to produce an reaction? One Will seek the comfort and love of the lord, while another may become very angry and blame God, thus creating a emotional barrier towards God?
You asked the right question at the right time my friend. A man I know just lost his two year old son in a very tragic accident. The boy died last Sat. and on Tues. afternoon he stood up at a memorial service and told everyone why he was not blaming God and why no one else should. It’s in three parts so be sure and watch all three. It is worth the time.

Because some become bitter instead of enlightened. They listen to The evil one instead of the one who can heal them. They look at the things they lost, not the things they still have. For Lance Armstrong, Your still here aren’t you. The rest of you made it. Your loss is very small!! God is GOOD!!
Lance didn’t give up. He had strength in himself.
Mattie did. He believed his only hope was from a divine source.
They get "Closer to God" because it is a way to make themselves feel better… To make whatever adverse thing that happened seem "Better" because "god" saved them or intervened or whatever…
It is a way to make it seem as if the adversity had a "Reason" or a "Purpose" instead of it just being yet another random event in their lives.
It is a way to make a brush with death seem less traumatic because you may have died but god was on your side.
It is simply yet another way that humans delude themselves into believing that their lives have more meaning and purpose then they really do…
It isn’t MY fault because God MADE this happen…
God sent me a challenge to overcome…
Small minded people enhancing their delusions of grandeur…
I find it sad.
becuase sometimes God has to take everything away from you to humble you and to make you realize that the only way you are hear today is through him. the wise ones take what they have learned from the darkest moments in their life and use it to help others in the future
Sadly, most people either come to the Lord when all else has failed or they shake their fist at the Lord.
However, the above was never how God intended for mankind to believe.
Our Lord desire’s us to come to Him when we are in good spirit/good health.
Although, our loving God will always help should we come to Him in dire need.
We can view the thief on the cross in a similar sense, the criminal was very blessed to have such an opportunity.

There is a saying:
"You Never know how much you need Jesus, until Jesus is all you have!"
Adversity brought me back to a closer walk with God after I went through a period of rebellion. Things went extremely downhill in all areas of my life when I tried to ignore Him, and I had no one left to turn to but Him. We are to be glad to take up our ‘cross’ and follow the Lord. A believer can be called to experience: trials and tribulations, doubts about their faith, persecution from others, and/or overwhelming bondage to sin. Anyway if everything was going well would you still need God. I believe adversity can help us be humble, empathetic, and have a stronger relationship with God.
Fox hole agnostic here.I don’t claim to know or understand (ha ha) the whole story.I do believe that the great Intelligence, whatever it is, understands. Being much more inclusive than we are, it has the big picture. We frail humans don’t and can’t. And bless the hearts of all those who overcome their circumstances and "limitations." To me that’s what Jesus’ message is all about. Its NOT about casting blame or judging who’s good or evil.
Some people actually think about the existence of evil and what kind of a monster god would have to be to permit so much of it on earth.
Other people just bury their heads in the sand because they can’t deal with the trauma of losing their imaginary friend along with everything else.
Some people look to imaginary beings for comfort, some don’t.
Is that somehow a challenge to atheism? The fact that traumatic experiences make people want to seek out comfo
"You Never know how much you need Jesus, until Jesus is all you have!"
Replace "Jesus" with "alcohol" and it doesn’t sound any more stupid.
